This week, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to play a pivotal role in the first-ever ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit, scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on October 20, 2023.

The summit will bring together leaders from Southeast Asia and the Gulf region to forge closer ties and strengthen diplomatic cooperation.

The summit will be held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. President Marcos will arrive on October 19, 2023, ahead of the summit, and depart immediately after the event.

In addition to the summit itself, President Marcos is slated to meet with the Filipino community in Saudi Arabia. He will also hold a focused business roundtable discussion with Saudi Arabian business leaders, joined by representatives from the Ministry of Investments in Saudi Arabia.

Assistant Secretary Daniel Espiritu, who provided insights into the upcoming events, highlighted the potential areas of focus during these bilateral meetings.

Discussions with Saudi Arabia may encompass the longstanding 54-year diplomatic relationship between the two nations, while conversations with Bahrain are likely to center on the 45th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

Moreover, the presentation of the Maharlika funds to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is expected to be a significant topic of conversation. The protection and well-being of Filipino nationals working abroad, especially in light of labor reforms being proposed in Saudi Arabia, will also be a key concern.
The Arab nations' assistance in the development of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is another pivotal issue for the discussions.

The ASEAN-GCC Summit's primary agenda is the endorsement of a framework for cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The roots of this relationship date back to 1990, making this summit a historic first. Discussions during the meeting will extend to regional and international matters, with a particular focus on current developments in the Middle East.

Espiritu emphasized that the summit's main focus would be on endorsing the cooperation framework for the years 2024 to 2028, as well as the joint statement summarizing the summit's deliberations.
