President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has directed the Department of Education (DepEd) to intensify efforts aimed at boosting the country's performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). During a recent sectoral meeting at Malacañang, President Marcos emphasized the importance of addressing key areas, including teaching quality, nutrition, campus bullying, and teacher specializations.
President Marcos underscored the significance of enhancing teachers' teaching quality, believing that a substantial improvement of around 60 percent is possible. Education Undersecretary Michael Poa, in a subsequent press briefing, highlighted the President's directive to update teachers' knowledge in technology, a crucial aspect in modern education.
The President also urged DepEd to tackle issues such as campus bullying and to further aid teachers in their specializations. Undersecretary Poa affirmed that these issues were already being addressed, with ongoing coordination between DepEd and other relevant agencies.
DepEd presented the President with details of the school-based feeding program, implemented in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). The government increased the budget for this program from P5.6 billion last year to P11.7 billion this year, aiming to ensure continuity and expanded coverage.
During the briefing, Education Undersecretary Gina Gonong reported that the Philippines recorded a two-point increase in Reading, a seven-point increase in Math, but a one-point decrease in Science in the latest PISA results. However, she noted that these changes were not significant, and the country remained at a low proficiency level. A total of 7,193 15-year-old Filipino students participated in the PISA 2022, representing 83 percent of the total population of students in the country.
DepEd's ongoing efforts to enhance learner performance include the National Learning Recovery Program, the pilot implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum, and initiatives to improve teacher well-being. The department also plans to introduce Catch-up Fridays, focusing on improving reading and writing skills, and launch Digi-ed, a digital portal for accessing learning materials.
President Marcos emphasized the need for continuous enhancements in these areas, recognizing their pivotal roles in the overall development of the country's education system.
