A group consisting of 300 native Dumagat/Remontado people have reached further in their nine-day Alay-Lakad to oppose the proposed Kaliwa Dam project in the Philippines.
The group started their journey last February 15 in General Nakar, Quezon and is expected to reach Malacanang on February 23, 2023.
The Kaliwa Dam project, which involves the construction of a new dam in the Kaliwa River, has been a subject of controversy for many years. Many environmental groups and indigenous communities have opposed the project, citing its potential negative impact on the environment and on the livelihood of the indigenous people who live in the affected areas.
Dumagat/Remontado Indigenous People hope that their march will draw attention to their opposition to the Kaliwa Dam project and encourage the government to reconsider the project's impact on their communities and the environment.
As of February 17, 2023, the group has already reached Maragondon, Real, Quezon, on the third day of their journey. The group plans to continue their march over the next several days, stopping at different locations to rest and gather support for their cause.
