PSA Bares Poverty Statistics In First Semester 2023

The Philippines Statistics Authority shared its report that in the first semester of 2023, the country has seen a poverty incidence of 22.4 percent among the Filipino population, equating to approximately 25.24 million individuals struggling to meet basic needs. Families of five members, on average, require at least PhP13,797 per month to cover essential food and non-food necessities during this period.

Digging deeper, subsistence incidence stands at 8.7 percent, affecting about 9.79 million Filipinos whose income falls short of acquiring basic food needs. The monthly food threshold for a family of five is estimated at PhP 9,550.

Focusing on families, the first semester of 2023 reports a poverty incidence of 16.4 percent, translating to 4.51 million poor families. Simultaneously, subsistence incidence among families is recorded at 5.9 percent, impacting around 1.62 million families grappling with insufficient resources for basic food requirements. These statistics underscore the pressing need for comprehensive efforts to address poverty and enhance the well-being of Filipino households.
