Pura Luka Vega was arrested yesterday, October 4, 2023, leading to her confinement at Police Station 3 in Sta. Cruz, Manila.
Amadeus Fernando Pagente, commonly recognized as Pura Luka Vega, expressed her disbelief at the situation, calling it profoundly unfair.
"I think it's very unfair to be in this position," lamented Pura, who had submitted her counter affidavit in response to the charges filed against her in the Manila Regional Trial Court.
She claimed to be unaware of the warrant of arrest, having never received any prior notification about it.
"For some reasons I don't know why --- that I was already given the warrant of arrest," Pura exclaimed, clearly shocked by the turn of events.
Pura regarded her art as a form of self-expression and emphasized that she was not afraid. "I don't think I should fear something that I'm pretty sure and I believe within myself that I did nothing wrong," she asserted confidently.
The arrest, executed by Manila police officers disguised as delivery riders, was carried out at Pura Luka Vega's residence around 4 PM.
The charges filed against her include Immoral Doctrine, Obscene Publication and Exhibition, and Indecent Show, prompting her arrest as per the warrant issued by Manila RTC Branch 36.
Following Pura's arrest, the LGBTQIA+ community swiftly organized a protest at the police station in a powerful display of solidarity. Pura Luka Vega, in response to the criticism she has faced, reflected on the attention directed towards her amidst the numerous challenges the Philippines is currently grappling with. "Many issues plague the Philippines, so I don't know if I deserve this kind of attention," she said, highlighting the broader societal issues that need urgent address.
