Red And Yellow Alerts Issued On May 8 For Luzon Power Grids
Yellow and Red Alerts were issued in Luzon on May 8, 2023 causing power outage in several areas.
According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the available capacity of the grid was 12,186MW, while the peak demand was 12,468MW. This means that the grid's operating margin was tight.
Unfortunately, the situation is compounded by the fact that five power plants are on forced outage, and three others are running on derated capacities, totaling 1,354MW unavailable to the grid. This shortage of power supply has resulted in the issuance of a red alert status from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and again from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
A red alert status is issued when the available power supply is not enough to meet the demand for power from consumers and the transmission grid's regulating requirements. This means that consumers may experience power outages during these periods.
The situation improves slightly during the yellow alert period, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A yellow alert is issued when the grid's operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's regulating and contingency requirements. During this period, consumers may experience voltage fluctuations or some curtailment of their electricity supply.
