Robin Padilla Calls For An End To The Impunity In Negros Oriental

Senator Robinhood Padilla has called for an end to the impunity in Negros Oriental following the killing of former Gov. Roel Degamo.
Padilla expressed his disappointment that the suspects involved in the murder were members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) who were supposed to protect and serve the people. He said the police officers were trained using government funds, and therefore, their actions are unacceptable.
During the continuation of the Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs on Wednesday, April 19, Padilla emphasized that the issue being tackled is complicated but the lack of trust in the police, the continued impunity in Negros, and the destruction of the PNP's name are the main problems.
Padilla also asked if the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) could possibly take over Negros Oriental and address the problem in the area.
"Sa ating Konstitusyon malinaw sinasabi kapag ang isang lugar ay pinamumugaran na ng ganitong klaseng krimen pinapayagan po ang Pangulo ng Pilipinas na mag-takeover kayo at ayusin ang lugar na yan. Sa palagay ninyo di pa ito napapanahon sa Negros Oriental (Our Constitution is clear - if an area is infested with crimes, the President is allowed to authorize the military to take over. Do you think it is time for this in Negros Oriental)?" he asked.
Grace Poe Suspects "Big-Time Backer" for Accused Police Officer
In the same hearing, Senator Grace Poe expressed her belief that the police officer involved in the attack of businessmen Anthony Jason Ong and Sandy Tinguha in Dumaguete City in 2021 is being backed by a "bigtime" individual.
Poe revealed that Atty. Kaiser Cordero, who belongs to a prominent law firm, is providing legal assistance to PSSgt. Noel Alabata, the police officer accused of the crime.
Poe noted that the law firm is not an ordinary one and has been handling a number of top companies.
“Maybe Alabata is being backed by a big-time individual because you would need deep pockets to be able to afford the services of this firm,” Poe said in Filipino.
