Manila, Philippines - In the midst of a global geopolitical shift, the West Philippine Sea issue continues to draw attention from various countries and allies. The United States and other allies of the Philippines have openly called on China to respect the decision of the United Nations Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) regarding the territorial dispute. However, Russia, a significant player on the international stage, remains neutral on the matter.
During an interview with CNN Philippines, Russian Ambassador Marat Pavlov shed light on Russia's position concerning the West Philippine Sea issue. He emphasized that Russia is not a party to the territorial dispute and does not take sides. Instead, Russia advocates for the resolution of differences between involved parties through political and diplomatic means, in accordance with international law, including the UN Convention.
Ambassador Pavlov also acknowledged the efforts of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China in finding ways to normalize the situation, particularly through the development of a Code of Conduct. However, he expressed concerns about external forces interfering in the settlement of territorial problems, calling such attempts counterproductive.
When asked about Russia's recognition of the decision of the UNCLOS tribunal, Ambassador Pavlov reiterated his stance that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and negotiations among the interested parties. He emphasized the importance of regional forces in achieving a satisfactory resolution. However, he did not explicitly state whether Russia recognizes the decision of the tribunal as a valid standard to be recognized worldwide.
In response to a query regarding the perceived pressure in the matter, Ambassador Pavlov highlighted the detrimental effects of increasing confrontation in the South China Sea. He stressed the need for calm and a conducive atmosphere for productive negotiations, discouraging unnecessary confrontation that could hinder progress towards a resolution.
While Russia's position remains neutral, its role as an original member of the United Nations and a member of the UN Security Council underscores its significance in global affairs. As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the West Philippine Sea issue stands as a complex challenge requiring diplomatic efforts and cooperation from all parties involved.
