The Supreme Court has issued a resolution ordering the immediate re-arrest and detention of former Palawan Governor Mario Joel Reyes, a key suspect in the murder of Dr. Geraldo "Gerry" Ortega, a veterinarian and anchor of several radio shows in Palawan.

The resolution, dated March 29, 2023, was made public on Sunday and mandates the Puerto Princesa City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 52 to carry out the order promptly.

Furthermore, the court has been instructed to proceed with the criminal proceedings expeditiously.

Reyes is one of the accused in Criminal Case No. 26839, which revolves around the murder of Ortega.

The incident occurred on January 24, 2011, when the veterinarian and radio show host was fatally shot.

Shortly after the shooting, the authorities apprehended the gunman, Marlon Recamata, following a brief chase.

Recamata, in an extrajudicial confession on the same day of his arrest, admitted to shooting Ortega and implicated three other individuals in the crime. The suspects named were Rodolfo Edrad, also known as Bumar, Dennis C. Aranas, and Armando "Salbakota" Noel Jr.

It is believed that their alleged involvement in the murder is a crucial aspect of the ongoing criminal case.

With the Supreme Court's resolution, the focus now shifts to the Puerto Princesa City RTC Branch 52, which is tasked with implementing the re-arrest and ensuring Reyes's detention. Simultaneously, the court has been urged to expedite the criminal proceedings, emphasizing the importance of a swift and fair resolution in this high-profile case.
