SEAMEO INNOTECH, in collaboration with its partners and sponsors, is set to host the inaugural Youth Summit 2023: Transforming Education in Southeast Asia. The two-day summit, scheduled for June 27-28, aims to empower youth leaders and foster innovation in education across the Southeast Asia region.

Following the Youth Declaration launched during the 2022 Transforming Education Summit of the United Nations in New York, the upcoming event seeks to further emphasize the vital role of youth engagement in education. By gathering approximately 150 youth leaders from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, Vietnam, and the Philippines, the summit aims to create a platform for sharing innovative ideas and programs.

"As truly innovators and leaders of the future, these youth have recognized the challenges hindering education and have formulated methods that could revolutionize the teaching and learning process," stated Leonor Magtolis Briones, INNOTECH Centre Director and former Education Secretary.

The Youth Summit 2023 will be entirely youth-led, providing an opportunity for the participants to lead the discussions and reflections on how the Youth Declaration can be effectively implemented at various levels, including classrooms, schools, communities, and countries.

The summit will commence at the SEAMEO INNOTECH headquarters on Commonwealth Avenue in Diliman, Quezon City. To kick off the event, the youth delegates will present the Youth Declaration, which will outline their collective recommendations for transforming education and highlight their commitments to taking action. Breakout sessions will facilitate parallel conversations and presentations, allowing participants to exchange ideas and identify concrete recommendations for youth-led innovations and working models.

The summit aligns with INNOTECH's commitment to the Global Youth Initiative, with a particular focus on the fourth sustainable development goal. Key areas of focus include education-to-employment transition, digital learning, youth leadership, inclusive education, civic engagement, and environmental resilience.

Briones, reflecting on her experience as Secretary of Education, expressed her admiration for the dedication and investment displayed by the region's promising youth leaders. She stated, "Here we see that promising and talented youth are as engaged and invested in their education in the same degree as the governments, policymakers, leaders, and teachers across the SEA region. Truly, a wonder to see, meet, and listen to these promising leaders of the future."

To mark the significance of this event, the world-renowned Manila Concert Choir (MCC) will provide a special performance for the youth delegates and participants.

SEAMEO INNOTECH is hosting the Youth Summit 2023 with the support of esteemed partners and sponsors, including the Department of Education, SEAMEO Secretariat, ASEAN Secretariat, UNICEF Philippines, Philippine National Commission for UNESCO, the Head Foundation, USAID Philippines Opportunity 2.0 Program, Pointwest Phils., and other SEAMEO centers in the ASEAN region.
