In an effort to address the funding challenges faced by the health sector, Senator Pia Cayetano has eagerly awaited the passage of a bill that aims to establish regional specialty centers within Department of Health (DOH) hospitals. On Wednesday, May 17, 2023, Cayetano co-sponsored Senate Bill No. 2212, which included her proposal in the consolidated measure.
The senator emphasized the need for specialty centers across the country, acknowledging the importance of these facilities in providing specialized healthcare services to Filipinos. However, she also recognized the financial constraints associated with constructing standalone specialty centers. "It is not difficult to recognize the need for specialty centers around the country. But the reality is, it will be very expensive to put up specialty centers on their own. So this bill solves a big part of this problem. It is clearly cost-efficient and practical," Cayetano explained.
While emphasizing the significance of regional specialty centers, Cayetano stressed that primary health care facilities should receive a substantial portion of the government's annual health budget allocation. Recognizing the importance of preventive and basic healthcare services, the senator believes that directing a significant portion of resources towards primary care will contribute to a comprehensive and well-rounded healthcare system.
