In a recent radio program appearance, Senator JV Ejercito praised the collaboration between the Philippines, the Japanese government, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in advancing the construction of the 147-kilometer North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR). Emphasizing its potential to accelerate travel, generate employment, and distribute progress, Ejercito expressed satisfaction that the project is moving forward under the current administration with support from the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and ADB.

Acknowledging past delays due to funding challenges, Ejercito voiced optimism that the NSCR will not encounter further setbacks. As the Chair of the Senate Committees on Local Government and on Urban Planning, Housing, and Resettlement, he highlighted the project's significance for the nation's development.

Ejercito, who had previously advocated for Japanese collaboration in vital railway projects, underscored Japan's reliability as a partner, citing its lower interest rates compared to other options. Senators Grace Poe and Risa Hontiveros supported Ejercito's call.

The NSCR, with a funding requirement of P873.6 billion, receives contributions from JICA and ADB, amounting to P369.27 billion and P329.55 billion, respectively. The Philippine government is covering the remaining P174.78 billion.

Upon completion in 2029, the NSCR aims to reduce travel time from Calamba to Clark by at least 50 percent, boasting 35 stations and 50 commuter train sets. The system, projected to serve 800,000 passengers daily, includes express trains catering to Clark International Airport users.

DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista echoed President Bongbong Marcos Jr. 's call for concerted efforts to ensure timely project completion.
