Senator Cynthia Villar Commits To Promoting Food Self-Sufficiency In Philippines

Sen. Cynthia Villar reiterated her commitment to improving the lives of Filipino farmers and ensuring that her legislative efforts address the needs of the country's agriculture sector, with the ultimate goal of promoting food security. As the chairperson of the Senate committee on agriculture and food, she led the Ribbon Cutting ceremony and opening program of "The Philippine Poultry Show and ILDEX Philippines 2023" at the SMX Convention Center.
The event showcased cutting-edge technology and informative seminars focusing on the poultry industry, livestock, and dairy products. Over 100 exhibitors from more than 20 countries, including prominent companies specializing in animal health, breeding and hatching, farm production, and feed ingredients and additives, participated in the event.
Sen. Villar emphasized that one of her priority legislations for the 19th Congress is the "Livestock, Poultry and Dairy Development and Competitiveness Act of 2022," which she believes is highly relevant to the poultry industry. Additionally, she expressed her dedication to passing the "Yellow Corn Industry Development Act of 2022" to provide further support to the livestock, poultry, and dairy sectors.
By enacting these bills, Sen. Villar aims to bolster these industries and afford backyard farmers the opportunity to enhance their livelihoods. She also highlighted her efforts to combat smuggling by amending the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act of 2016 to include acts of hoarding, profiteering, and cartel formation related to agricultural products as economic sabotage. Furthermore, she proposed the establishment of Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Courts to ensure the accountability of individuals and organizations involved in these illicit activities.
Sen. Villar pledged to prioritize passing these bills and emphasized that they are just some of the measures she intends to implement to uplift the agriculture sector. She restated her promise to join the Filipino people in their aspiration for a food-sufficient Philippines. With her unwavering dedication and focus on agriculture, Sen. Villar aims to contribute to the nation's progress and the betterment of its farmers and consumers alike.
