Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada expressed deep concern over the ongoing cases of maltreatment and abuse suffered by domestic helpers despite the enactment of Republic Act No. 10361 (RA 10361), commonly referred to as the 'Batas Kasambahay Act.'

The senator's call for revisiting the legislation came during an inquiry focused on the severe maltreatment of househelp Elvie Vergara, which has sparked outrage nationwide.

The 'Batas Kasambahay Act,' which was enacted a decade ago, aimed to safeguard the rights and welfare of domestic helpers, ensuring fair treatment and protection against exploitation. However, a growing number of incidents involving maltreatment have highlighted the challenges in implementing the law effectively.

During the inquiry, Senator Estrada raised the crucial question of whether amendments were necessary to address the persistent abuses and better shield domestic helpers from mistreatment. He also advocated for the imposition of heavier penalties against employers who engage in abusive practices, emphasizing the need to create a strong deterrent against such behavior.

"My only intention is to ensure that Aling Elvie receives the justice she deserves," Senator Estrada asserted passionately during the hearing. His words resonated with the public, as the case of Elvie Vergara has drawn attention to the harrowing experiences that many domestic helpers endure behind closed doors.

Advocates for domestic worker rights and human rights organizations have joined the senator in his call for reevaluation and reform. Many believe that strengthening the existing legislation is crucial in preventing further maltreatment cases and ensuring a safer environment for domestic helpers across the nation.

As the committee's inquiry continues, the plight of Elvie Vergara stands as a stark reminder of the urgency to address the gaps in the 'Batas Kasambahay Act.' Senator Estrada's determination to amend the law and impose stricter penalties against abusive employers has ignited a broader conversation about the treatment of domestic helpers and the need for comprehensive protection measures.
