In a significant development during the resumed session of the Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs, Senator Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa appealed to six police officers implicated in the tragic killing of 17-year-old Jerhode Jemboy Baltazar. The hearing, held on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, aimed to shed light on the incident that has raised doubts about the integrity of the police force.

Dela Rosa's plea was straightforward yet powerful as he urged the police officers involved to reveal the truth behind the incident, emphasizing that it was crucial not to further erode public confidence in law enforcement. With the hearing now entering its third day, Dela Rosa expressed his hopes that those responsible for the incident would opt for honesty, taking full responsibility for their actions and any subsequent consequences.

The tragic killing of Jemboy Baltazar has provoked widespread outrage, with many expressing concern over the alarming trend of alleged abuses committed by members of the Philippine National Police. Senator Raffy Tulfo, who addressed the committee during the same hearing, delivered a passionate speech condemning the pattern of abusive behavior exhibited by certain police officers.

Tulfo, known for his advocacy of justice, shared that he had received numerous complaints, predominantly from marginalized individuals, regarding instances of police misconduct. He underscored the crucial role entrusted to law enforcement officers – that of safeguarding the public and upholding the law. However, he lamented that some officers seemed to have strayed from this duty, causing harm to the very citizens they were meant to protect.

"How can we trust you when in fact you are the ones assaulting us and violating our human rights?" Tulfo posed this question, reflecting the frustration and disappointment felt by many who had looked to the police for safety and justice.
