Authorities are on the hunt for a suspect involved in the attempted rape of a female student on the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) campus.

The incident occurred on the night of July 1 along Ylanan Street, prompting a swift response from the UPD Police (UPDP) and campus administration.

According to witnesses, the suspect pursued the victim into a dimly lit and slightly wooded area known as the dry creek. He allegedly pushed and dragged her, attempting to assault her. However, before he could commit the act, several passersby happened upon the scene, causing the perpetrator to flee while the victim sought immediate help.

"This incident is alarming and highly unusual for UPD, known for its peaceful environment," Quezon City Police District Director General Nicolas D Torre III said. "It reflects well on the reputation of UP in terms of maintaining peace, order, and effective anti-criminal operations carried out by the UP Police Force," he added.

In response to the incident, the UPD Office of the Chancellor released a statement, assuring the community that the administration is actively working with law enforcement agencies to apprehend the suspect. The survivor is also being provided with the necessary support and assistance.

To enhance security measures, additional roving security personnel and UPD police officers will be deployed across various areas of the campus, particularly during non-office hours. The UPD administration urges everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the UPDP. (UPD Police)
"We are currently looking into several persons of interest and following leads," Director Torre revealed. "Our task operation last night, as well as ongoing visits to neighboring barangays and CCTV footage analysis, are part of our information and evidence gathering efforts. Once our investigation is complete, we will be able to provide more answers," he said.

The UPD community is encouraged to contact the UPDP at 8981-8500 local 113 in case of an emergency or to approach a security officer on campus for immediate assistance.
