In a disappointing turn of events, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters' persistent shooting woes haunted them until the final game of the 42nd Jones Cup. The team faced a crushing defeat against the newly-crowned champions, the University of California-Irvine, with a final score of 115-61.
Throughout the tournament, the Elasto Painters struggled to find their shooting rhythm, and this game was no exception. They managed to convert just one basket out of their first 20 attempts, including an 0-for-10 performance from beyond the three-point line.
The cold start put Rain or Shine at a considerable disadvantage early on, trailing UC Irvine by a staggering 26-6 after the opening period. The team failed to recover from this deficit, leading to a massive 54-point blowout.
Adding to the team's challenges, import player Nick Evans was ejected from the game at the 4:56 mark of the first quarter. Evans was involved in an unsportsmanlike foul incident with a University of Irvine player, followed by a technical foul for engaging in a verbal altercation with coach Russel Turner.
By halftime, Rain or Shine was already trailing by 30 points. Andrei Caracut was the lone bright spot for the Elasto Painters, contributing 14 points in an otherwise lackluster performance. With this loss, Rain or Shine concluded the tournament with a 2-6 record. Their final standing could range from seventh to sixth place, depending on the outcome of the match between Iran and Chinese Taipei-B, both of which had similar 2-5 records.
Rain or Shine's victory over Iran, 98-90, in double overtime was overshadowed by their defeat to Chinese Taipei-B, 89-79.
On the other side, the University of California-Irvine dominated the competition, achieving a flawless eight-game sweep to clinch the championship. Derin Saran emerged as the top scorer of the tournament with 23 points, while Emilis Butkus and Devin Tellis contributed 18 and 16 points, respectively.
In their previous game, UC Irvine defeated Chinese Taipei-A with a score of 95-80, securing their title.
Following this defeat, the Taiwanese team found themselves tied with the Korean Basketball League (KBL) champion Anyang KGC at 6-1. The two teams faced off later on Sunday (August 20,2023) to determine the runner-up position.
Qatar secured the fourth position with an even 4-4 record, followed by the United Arab Emirates at 3-5.
The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters are expected to return home on Monday (August 21,2023) evening, reflecting on their challenging performance in the 42nd Jones Cup.
