Senator Mark Villar has expressed his concern over the recent surge in cyberattacks on government agencies, with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) being the latest victim.

He said that there is an alarming frequency of such incidents and the need for more stringent measures to protect sensitive and private information.

Villar filed Resolution No. 811, directing the Senate to conduct an inquiry into the cyberattack incident and similar attacks on government websites, and stating the need for robust cybersecurity measures.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) found itself in a data breach on October 7, 2023. This has affected its Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS).

PSA said it is currently evaluating the extent of personal data potentially compromised within the CBMS, and that they will share relevant information with both authorities and the general public in due course.

The agency said they are working closely with the Compliance and Monitoring Division of the National Privacy Commission (NPC), the National Computer Emergency Response Team-Philippines (NCERT-PH) under the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and the Anti-Cybercrime Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
