In a move to bolster enforcement of the exclusive EDSA busway policy, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has introduced a revamped Special Operations Group.
Tasked with intensifying efforts against unauthorized motorists on the EDSA Busway, the group operates under the direct supervision of Assistant General Manager for Operations Asec. David Angelo Vargas and Deputy Officer-in-Charge Gabriel Go.
As part of the restructuring, apprehending officers within the group will be equipped with body-worn cameras, ensuring transparency and eliminating disputes. Asec. Vargas emphasized that these cameras are connected to the Communications and Command Center, with feeds that cannot be edited or turned off, minimizing hearsays.
Stiffer fines for EDSA Busway violations have already shown promising results, with a notable decline in the number of apprehended motorcycle riders and drivers. As of November 28, 9 am, 41 violators have been cited, comprising 23 motorcycles, 17 four-wheeled vehicles, and 1 public utility bus.
The AGM for Operations highlighted the impact of increased fines, attributing the decrease in apprehensions to the stricter measures imposed since November 13. Last week alone, the MMDA recorded 345 apprehensions, a significant drop from the initial week of implementation.
The newly formed Special Operations Group continues its operations, making a notable impact in its recent operation in Monumento-Rotonda, Caloocan City. A total of 53 violators were apprehended, including 32 motorcycles, 16 four-wheeled vehicles, three vans, one public utility bus, and one public utility jeepney. Offenders were issued citations with a P5,000 fine for their first violation.
