The construction of the Quezon Avenue and East Avenue underground station including tunnels (Contract Package 102) for the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) has officially commenced.

This groundbreaking event was attended by various government officials and executives from the Joint Venture of Nishimatsu Construction Co. Ltd. and D.M. Consunji Inc., who signed the contract with DOTr last November 3, 2022.

The ceremony was held at the station plaza in Quezon Avenue, and among the notable attendees were DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista, DND Secretary Carlito Galvez, DHSUD Secretary Jose Rizalino Azucar, Quezon City Administrator Michael Alimurung, 1st District Congressman Arjo Atayde, NHA General Manager Joeben Tai, Embassy of Japan Economic Minister NIHEI Daisuke, and JICA Senior Representative KURONUMA Kenji.

The MMSP Phase 1 is a massive infrastructure project aimed to address the public transport problems and heavy traffic conditions in Metro Manila. The project is funded by the Official Development Assistance (ODA) of JICA and is expected to connect with various railway networks such as LRT-1, MRT-3, MRT-7, and the Grand Common Station.

The construction of the Quezon Avenue and East Avenue underground station including tunnels is a significant step towards the completion of the MMSP. JICA Senior Representative KURONUMA highlighted its importance, noting its strategic location surrounded by government offices, hospitals, residential areas, business centers, and shopping malls. DOTr Secretary Bautista expressed his appreciation for the support of the Government of Japan and JICA, stating that the MMSP will be the crown jewel of the Philippine transport system.

The MMSP is consistent with the “Build Better More” program of the Marcos administration, and this groundbreaking ceremony serves as another building block for the first-ever subway line in the country. The MMSP Phase 1 is expected to be completed soon, and it is hoped that it will significantly improve the transportation system in Metro Manila.
