In the latest National Social Weather Survey conducted from December 8-11, 2023, 96% of adult Filipinos are ushering in the New Year with hope, marking a positive shift from the 95% recorded in 2022.

This figure stands as the highest since the pre-pandemic optimism of 96% in 2019.

On the flip side, only 3% express entering the New Year with fear, showcasing a decline of 2 points from the 5% reported in 2022.

Interestingly, optimism for the New Year has steadily increased over the years. The initial survey in 2000 recorded 87% hope, gradually reaching the 90s by the end of 2002 and maintaining a positive trajectory until the present, peaking at 96% in 2023.

The December 2023 survey also sheds light on Christmas expectations, with 73% of adult Filipinos anticipating a happy Christmas, mirroring the figures from 2022. In contrast, 6% expect a sad Christmas, while 21% foresee a neutral experience.

Notably, those expecting a happy or neutral Christmas exhibit higher percentages of hope for the New Year at 98% and 95%, respectively, compared to those anticipating a sad Christmas at 84%.

Geographically, hope for the New Year has seen a slight increase in Metro Manila (93% to 97%) and Mindanao (93% to 96%) compared to the end of 2022. Balance Luzon maintains a steady 97%, while the Visayas experiences a modest decrease from 95% to 93%.

Examining educational levels, optimism for the coming year has risen across the board: from 92% to 93% among non-elementary graduates, 95% to 97% among elementary graduates, 95% to 96% among junior high school graduates, and 96% to 98% among college graduates.
