Air defense units of Taiwan’s Armed Forces remain on high alert for contingencies as China carried out “Joint Sword” which concluded Tuesday, April 10, 2023.
This statement was tweeted by the Ministry of National Defense of Taiwan in response to the recent meeting between Taiwan's leader Tsai Ing-wen and the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, and other U.S. politicians, which has sparked strong reactions and increased tensions in the region.
The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command launched combat readiness security patrol encircling the territories in the self-governed island and carried out the "Joint Sword" exercise from April 8 to 10, 2023, as scheduled.
Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the PLA Eastern Theater Command, stated that this was a stern warning to the "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces and their collusion with external forces, and a necessary move to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning, when asked about China's recent activities near Taiwan, stated that China will take resolute measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The spokesperson highlighted that the PLA's combat patrols and "Joint Sword" drills were part of routine military exercises aimed at enhancing combat readiness and maintaining national security. These activities were conducted in accordance with China's lawful rights and interests as a sovereign nation, and were not targeted at any specific country or region.
The spokesperson further stated that Taiwan, as an integral part of China, is a core issue related to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Taiwan secessionist forces, who seek to separate Taiwan from China, and their collusion with external forces, pose a serious threat to China's national interests. The PLA's combat patrols and drills were a clear message to deter any attempts of secessionist activities by Taiwan and external forces.
