Timor-Leste has thrown its weight behind the Philippines' commitment to a rules-based international order and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. revealed this during a meeting with Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta on Friday November 10, 2023.

Beyond the customary diplomatic exchanges, President Marcos highlighted the depth of their discussions, emphasizing the productive dialogue on mechanisms and modalities that could benefit the Philippines in addressing challenges, particularly those concerning the South China Sea, known as the West Philippine Sea.

Expressing gratitude for the valuable insights shared by President Ramos-Horta, President Marcos underscored the significance of Timor-Leste's support for the Philippines in upholding a rules-based international law and adhering to UNCLOS.

The experienced perspective of President Ramos-Horta was recognized as a valuable asset in navigating the complexities surrounding the South China Sea disputes.

President Ramos-Horta, who arrived in Manila on Wednesday for a state visit, demonstrated a keen understanding of international affairs during their meeting. The visit was aimed to further fortify bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and the Philippines.

During the discussions at Malacañang, both nations agreed to collaborate on various fronts, including civilian commercial aviation, a social security agreement for professionals, and educational cooperation among higher learning institutions.

This collaborative effort signifies a commitment to strengthening ties that have been cultivated since the formal establishment of diplomatic relations on May 20, 2002—a relationship that has flourished over the span of 21 years.
