Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta arrived in the Philippines on Wednesday November 8, 2023 for his official visit, aiming to bolster the bilateral relations between the two nations.
He was welcomed by Philippine Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Belinda Ante, and Manila International Airport Authority Assistant General Manager, Manuel Gonzales, upon his arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) at around 2 p.m.
Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines' unwavering support for Timor-Leste during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the 42nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Indonesia last May.
President Marcos assured Timor-Leste Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak that the Philippines would continue to be a steadfast partner in Timor-Leste's journey towards progress and development. During his state visit, President Ramos-Horta is scheduled to engage in discussions with President Marcos about various areas of cooperation between the two nations, including technical, political, educational, and economic partnerships. A bilateral meeting is set to take place on Friday, November 10, at the Malacanang Palace.
Representatives from key Philippine government agencies, including the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), will be present during the visit to facilitate productive dialogues and collaborations.
Timor-Leste's participation as an observer at the 42nd ASEAN Summit was met with enthusiasm by President Marcos, who commended the nation's progress towards democracy.
The ASEAN adopted a roadmap in May, paving the way for Timor-Leste's full membership in the organization. President Ramos-Horta expressed his optimism about Timor-Leste becoming a full-fledged ASEAN member ideally by 2025, although the nation remains open to other time frames recommended by fellow Southeast Asian leaders.
