Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau extended an invitation to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. during their recent meeting on the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits at the Jakarta Convention Center. The invitation comes as both nations prepare to commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations.
Prime Minister Trudeau expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming visit, highlighting economic ties, trade opportunities, and the contributions of the Filipino-Canadian diaspora. He noted the importance of strengthening bonds between Canada and the Philippines in the years to come.
President Marcos, in response to the invitation, conveyed his delight in meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau again. Additionally, he recognized Canada's engagement in the Asia-Pacific and Indo-Pacific regions, citing the increasing importance of their partnership.
The meeting marked the third encounter between President Marcos and Prime Minister Trudeau since President Marcos assumed office. It served as an opportunity for the Philippines to encourage trade and investments in clean, renewable energy, critical minerals exploration, and processing. Cooperation in agri-science and urban agriculture was also discussed, aligning with Canada's plan to establish a regional agriculture office in Manila. Furthermore, the two leaders explored avenues to expand collaboration in education and credentials recognition, enabling Filipinos to practice their professions in Canada.
Canada reaffirmed its support for the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea issue and expressed its commitment to defense cooperation, particularly in humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR).
