House Deputy Majority Leader Erwin T. Tulfo, along with two colleagues from the ACT-CIS partylist, and two other lawmakers, filed House Bill No. 9569, titled the "Providing Monthly Maintenance Medication Support Act for Senior Citizens." The proposed legislation aims to allocate a monthly financial assistance of P1,000 to support the medical requirements of senior citizens across the country.

The "Monthly Maintenance Medication Support Act for Senior Citizens" responds to the pressing issue of elderly citizens, particularly those grappling with chronic or long-term medical conditions.

The proposed legislation underscores the vital importance of safeguarding and enhancing the health and well-being of our senior citizens, acknowledging their significant contributions to society.

The bill declares the policy of the State to protect and promote the health and well-being of elderly citizens in line with the Constitution. It seeks to adopt an integrated and comprehensive approach to health services, prioritizing the underprivileged, sick, elderly, disabled, women, and children.

Under Section 3 of the bill, the government is mandated to provide monthly financial support amounting to P1,000 to all qualified senior citizens registered under Republic Act No. 9994, known as the "Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010." To be eligible, senior citizens must be Filipino citizens and submit an application to the Department of Health (DOH) or its designated agency, accompanied by a valid prescription for maintenance medications.

The legislators, led by Tulfo, emphasize that the proposed bill aims to improve the quality of life for senior citizens by easing the financial constraints associated with essential medications. It underscores the commitment of society to honor and care for senior citizens, ensuring they can enjoy their senior years with dignity and good health.

According to the latest survey by the Philippines Statistics Authority in 2020, there are approximately 9.2 million senior citizens or Filipinos aged 60 and above.

The proposed legislation seeks to address the healthcare challenges faced by this growing demographic, recognizing the need for financial assistance in managing chronic diseases.
