In the aftermath of Typhoon "Egay" the destruction and losses in the Philippines have surged from Php 512.9 million to Php 1.36 billion, exacerbating the impact on the agriculture and fishery sector. The updated reports from Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Western Visayas, and Central Luzon have revealed the true extent of the disaster.
Egay wreaked havoc on the agricultural sector, resulting in a staggering production loss of 62,259 metric tons, and adversely affecting 98,969 hectares of farmland and 91,268 farmers. An array of vital commodities, including rice, corn, high-value crops, livestock and poultry, and fisheries, have been severely impacted. Additionally, significant damage has been inflicted on agricultural facilities and fishing paraphernalia, further compounding the hardships faced by local communities.
In response to the widespread devastation, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has mobilized its Regional Field Offices (RFOs) to assess the extent of damage and losses in the agriculture and fishery sector. Collaborative efforts with concerned National Government Agencies (NGAs), Local Government Units (LGUs), and other Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM)-related offices are underway to evaluate the full extent of the impacts and identify available resources for interventions and assistance.
The DA has announced a series of interventions and aid to help affected farmers and fishers recover from the calamity: Distribution of agricultural seeds: A total of 111,873 bags of rice seeds, 14,426 bags of corn, and 2,582 kilograms of assorted vegetable seeds will be provided from regions impacted by Typhoon "Egay”. Livestock and poultry support: Drugs and biologics will be made available to assist in the recovery of livestock and poultry affected by the disaster.
Fingerlings assistance: The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) will provide fingerlings to help affected fisherfolk revive their fisheries.
Survival and Recovery (SURE) Loan Program: The Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC) is offering a loan program with a loanable amount of up to Php 25,000, payable in three years at zero interest, to aid in the recovery of affected farmers and fishers.
Quick Response Fund (QRF): Funds have been allocated to support the rehabilitation of areas impacted by the typhoon.
