Typhoon 'HANNA' Maintains Strength

Typhoon "HANNA" remains a formidable force as it continues its westward trajectory in the Western Pacific. According to the latest update from meteorological agencies, the typhoon is estimated to be approximately 710 km East Northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 150 km/h, and a central pressure of 975 hPa.

As of the most recent observations, Typhoon HANNA is moving at a speed of 15 km/h, with strong to typhoon-force winds extending up to 340 km from the center. While Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) are not currently in effect, forecasts suggest that HANNA is likely to maintain its west-northwestward movement, potentially passing close to or making landfall in the vicinity of Yaeyama Islands in the Ryukyu archipelago.

It is anticipated to make landfall in Taiwan and subsequently exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Sunday (September 3,2023) afternoon or evening. Beyond that, the typhoon is projected to turn westward, making landfall over mainland China on Monday (September 4,2023)morning or afternoon.

Meteorologists predict that HANNA will reach its peak intensity on Sunday morning before undergoing rapid weakening following its landfall in mainland China on Monday.

The impact of Typhoon HANNA, combined with the effects of Typhoon GORING and the Southwest Monsoon, has led to significant challenges across several regions. Here are the key updates:

• A total of 3,559 individuals from Region 1, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and Region 6 have been pre-emptively evacuated in preparation for the impact of Typhoon HANNA.
• As a result of the Southwest Monsoon enhanced by Typhoons GORING and HANNA, 106,677 affected families, consisting of 387,242 individuals, are spread across 7 regions, 26 provinces, 172 cities/municipalities, and 1,382 barangays.
• Currently, 46,528 individuals have been displaced, with 293 evacuation centers established to provide shelter.
• There has been one confirmed casualty reported, with no injuries or missing persons reported at this time.
• A total of 412 related incidents have been reported in various regions, including Region 1, Region 2, Region 3, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Region 6, and CAR.
• 482 houses have been damaged, with an estimated cost of ₱ 0 for damaged houses. Additionally, 13 infrastructure projects have been affected, resulting in an estimated cost of ₱ 41,216,200.
• Agriculture has been significantly impacted, with 8,734 affected farmers and fisherfolks, 16,339.13 hectares of crops affected, and ₱ 487,600 worth of livestock, poultry, and fisheries damaged. The estimated cost of damage to agriculture stands at ₱ 395,246,593.6.
• There have been no reported costs for other damaged assets at this time.
• One city/municipality has been declared under a State of Calamity.
• Several roads and bridges have been affected, with 72 road sections and 29 bridge sections impacted. Additionally, 76 seaports have been affected, with 5 seaports restored. Airports have not been affected, with 6 flights canceled and 6 flights resumed. Power, water supply, and communication lines have also been disrupted to varying degrees.
• Class suspension is in effect in 240 cities/municipalities, while work has been suspended in 94 cities/municipalities.
• An estimated ₱ 16,498,997.16 worth of assistance has been provided to those affected by the Southwest Monsoon and Typhoons GORING and HANNA.
