Typhoon Hanna, a powerful storm, has made landfall over Taitung County, Taiwan, bringing with it maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 255 km/h. The central pressure of Typhoon Hanna was recorded at 950 hPa at the time of landfall.
The eye of Typhoon Hanna was estimated to be located approximately 245 km North Northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, with coordinates 22.9°N, 121.2°E. The storm is currently moving west-northwestward at a speed of 20 km/h.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) are in effect, with TCWS No. 1 issued for the following areas: Batanes and Babuyan Islands.
As Typhoon Hanna crosses southern Taiwan, it is expected to weaken significantly due to the rugged terrain. There is a possibility that it may emerge over the Taiwan Strait and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) late this evening or tomorrow (September 4, 2023) morning.
Once outside the PAR region, Typhoon Hanna is forecasted to become slow-moving as it continues westward or west-northwestward over the Taiwan Strait. The weakening trend is expected to persist after crossing Taiwan, primarily due to land interaction and increasingly unfavorable environmental conditions.
The final destination for Typhoon Hanna is predicted to be a landfall along the coast of Guangdong or Fujian, China, on Tuesday, where it is expected to arrive as a Severe tropical storm. Beyond that, the storm may weaken further into a remnant low by late Wednesday (September 6, 2023) or Thursday (September 7, 2023).
Residents in affected areas are urged to stay vigilant, follow official advisories, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this typhoon event. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond to any emergencies that may arise.
