In the aftermath of the tragic mass shooting in Lewiston, which claimed the lives of 18 people, Democratic Rep. Jared Golden has taken a firm stance, calling for Congress to pass a comprehensive ban on assault rifles.

Golden's announcement comes as a shock to some, as he had previously opposed such bans, but he expressed his change of heart during a press conference at Lewiston City Hall on Thursday (October 26, 2023).

Golden admitted that he had harbored a "false confidence" that his community was immune to such deadly incidents. In a heartfelt plea, he stated, "For the good of my community, I will work with any colleague to get this done in the time that I have in Congress. To the people of Lewiston, to my constituents in the second district, to those who have been harmed, I ask for forgiveness and support as I seek to put an end to these terrible shootings."

The press conference also featured Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who previously supported an assault weapons ban in the 1990s but opposed recent legislative efforts to expand it.

Collins acknowledged Maine's rich tradition of gun ownership and proposed alternative measures, including a ban on high-capacity magazines and raising the minimum age requirement for acquiring high-capacity rifles.

The tragic events in Lewiston on Wednesday (October 25,2023) night marked the worst mass shooting in Maine's history. As of Thursday morning, law enforcement was still working to identify ten of the victims.

One such family is that of Bob and Lucille Violette, both in their 70s and active members of the community. Bob, a dedicated youth bowling coach, was hailed as a hero who lost his life trying to protect others during the shooting. His daughter-in-law, Jessica Dubois, shared the details of Bob's selfless act and their ongoing search for Lucille, who remains missing.

Dubois described the Violette family as kind and loving grandparents to her two children, who now grapple with the difficult task of processing the tragic news. The shooting has shattered the perception that even in one of the safest states in the country, gun violence on a massive scale can still occur.

In response to the tragedy in Lewiston, President Joe Biden released a statement expressing condolences and calling for immediate action on gun safety. He urged Republican lawmakers in Congress to work together to pass a bill banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, implement universal background checks, mandate safe gun storage, and end immunity from liability for gun manufacturers.
