The University of the Philippines Broadcasting Association expressed its concerns on GMA Network’s use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated sportscasters ahead of the opening of Season 99 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

The group believes that this raises significant concerns regarding the future of broadcasting and the livelihoods of those within the industry. While recognizing the inevitability of adapting emerging technologies, the association asserts that these tools should serve as aids to enhance human work rather than replace it entirely.

The official statement from the UP Broadcasting Association comes in response to GMA Network's announcement that its AI-generated sportscasters align with their mission of serving all communities and promoting inclusivity in reporting.

The group is concerned about the potential displacement of individuals who have dedicated years to studying and practicing the art of broadcasting. They add that using AI-generated sportscasters, while innovative, have the potential to put skilled media professionals at risk of job insecurity.

Rather than investing heavily in AI technology, the UP Broadcasting Association suggests that GMA Network should direct its resources towards hiring and fairly compensating talented journalists and media workers. This, they argue, would genuinely promote inclusivity within the industry by providing opportunities for aspiring media professionals.

The UP Broadcasting Association urged GMA Network to consider the essence of serving the people and to ensure that technological advancements do not come at the cost of human talent and livelihoods.
