The 3d Littoral Combat Team and 3d Marine Littoral Regiment of the United States alongside members of the Philippine Marine Corps, recently conducted bilateral weapons familiarization with an M252 81 mm mortar system during Balikatan 23 in Santa Juliana, Philippines. Balikatan 23 marks the 38th iteration of the annual bilateral exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the U.S. military.
The exercise, which spans three weeks, focuses on various training areas including amphibious operations, command and control, humanitarian assistance, urban operations, and counterterrorism skills throughout northern and western Luzon. The bilateral weapons familiarization session provided an opportunity for the marines from both nations to exchange knowledge and expertise in handling the M252 81 mm mortar system, a critical weapon in modern warfare.
The training was conducted in a cooperative and collaborative manner, with marines from both nations working closely together to enhance their proficiency and interoperability in using the mortar system. It involved hands-on training, including familiarization with the components of the weapon system, safety procedures, and live-fire exercises to hone their skills. Balikatan 23 is a testament to the enduring friendship and partnership between the U.S. military and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, as they continue to work together to enhance their joint capabilities and promote regional security in the Indo-Pacific region.
