The Philippines rolled out the welcome mat for U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III during his fourth visit to the country on November 18, 2024. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Secretary of National Defense Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr. joined Secretary Austin in celebrating the ever-growing bond between the two nations, emphasizing their shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Strengthening Ties Amid Challenges

At the heart of Secretary Austin’s visit was a clear message: the U.S. remains firmly committed to standing with the Philippines. As tensions in the South China Sea persist, Austin highlighted the importance of deeper collaboration, underscoring U.S. support for the Philippines in defending its sovereign rights. Both sides discussed ways to enhance defense cooperation, with Secretary Austin reaffirming that the Mutual Defense Treaty covers armed forces, vessels, and aircraft—including the Philippine Coast Guard—operating in the South China Sea.

Big Steps Forward: GSOMIA and the Combined Coordination Center

A major highlight of the visit was the signing of the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) at Camp Aguinaldo. This landmark agreement opens new avenues for information sharing, boosting interoperability between the two defense forces. To make the partnership even more dynamic, the two leaders also led the groundbreaking ceremony for the Combined Coordination Center (CCC)—a hub designed to streamline joint exercises, operations, and humanitarian missions.

A Helping Hand After Typhoon Pepito

In a show of solidarity, Secretary Austin announced an additional $1 million in humanitarian aid from USAID to support the Philippines’ recovery efforts following Super Typhoon Pepito. This gesture highlighted the humanitarian dimension of the alliance, showcasing the depth of U.S. support beyond military cooperation.

From Manila to Palawan: A Regional Focus

Secretary Austin’s visit didn’t stop in Manila. On November 19, he and Secretary Teodoro traveled to Palawan, where they visited Antonio Bautista Airbase, a key site under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA). They also toured the Philippines Western Command (WESCOM), which plays a vital role in securing the country’s interests in the South China Sea.

During their visit, they observed advanced maritime technology, including the T-12 Unmanned Surface Vessel provided by the U.S. through Foreign Military Financing. These cutting-edge tools are part of efforts to enhance the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ intelligence and maritime domain awareness capabilities.

A Shared Commitment to Peace and Security

From the South China Sea to disaster response, the engagements during Secretary Austin’s visit underscored the strength of the U.S.-Philippines alliance. As both nations continue to navigate regional challenges, this partnership remains a cornerstone for peace, security, and shared values in the Indo-Pacific.
