Agricultural Losses Soar To 1.23 Billion Due To El Nino; La Nina Watch Raised

In the latest Situation Report for El Niño, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA reveals a staggering P1.23 Billion loss in the agricultural sector.

PAGASA issued El Niño Advisory No. 1 on July 4, 2023, signaling the emergence of a weak El Niño. Subsequent assessments highlighted irregular rainfall patterns across the country, with notable exceptions in provinces such as La Union, Batanes, and Davao Region.

By September 2023, a moderate El Niño had taken hold, causing varied rainfall conditions. However, the situation escalated rapidly, reaching a strong El Niño by November 2023, leading to widespread drought conditions in multiple provinces.

As of PAGASA's latest update on March 7, 2024, signs of El Niño weakening are evident, expected to persist until March-April-May 2024. The majority of climate models predict a transition to ENSO-neutral conditions with a 79% chance, yet there's a 55% chance of La Niña development during June-July-August 2024.

With the imminent threat of La Niña, PAGASA has raised the ENSO Alert and Warning System to La Niña Watch. The March 2024 outlook foresees most parts of the country experiencing way below to below-normal rainfall conditions, with potential meteorological drought, dry spell, and dry conditions affecting various provinces.
