In an exclusive interview with Boy Abunda, Comedy Concert Queen Ai-Ai delas Alas confirmed rumors that she and her husband, Gerald Sibayan, have called it quits after ten years together. She revealed that Gerald broke the news in an unexpected text message on October 14, leaving her heartbroken and bewildered.

“Yes, we’re separated,” Ai-Ai said, somberly confirming the split. She recounted the moment, saying, “October 14, he messaged me in the early hours here in the Philippines. He told me he wanted to have children and that he wasn’t happy anymore.”

Ai-Ai admitted she was in shock after reading Gerald’s message, struggling to understand why he would break the news that way, especially since she was still in the Philippines and had plans to return to the U.S. to see him.

“I was confused, and shocked, wondering, ‘Why now? Why this hour?’ I wish he could have at least waited until I got back to the U.S.,” she said. “It’s confusing because we’ve never really fought. We’d have minor discussions but nothing serious. So it surprised me—why now? Why October? What’s so special about that day?”

Once she fully processed his words, Ai-Ai admitted to feeling a whirlwind of emotions, including anger. “My initial reaction was anger. I had to take a step back and think, ‘What is happening? Is this it?’”

She explained that, from the start of their relationship, she had tried to prepare herself for the possibility of separation, considering their age gap—Ai-Ai is now 60, while Gerald is 30. “Honestly, I’ve always tried to ready myself for this situation because I know Gerald’s young, and he might change his mind. But I hoped he wouldn’t. I hoped there was forever, that God would give me the chance to have a happy marriage.”

Returning to the U.S., Ai-Ai found that Gerald had already left their home. She felt no need to speak further with him, as his decision seemed final. “There’s nothing left to discuss. His messages made it clear that this was his definite decision,” she explained.

Ai-Ai also shared that she had done everything in her power to give Gerald a child, despite knowing she could no longer conceive naturally. They tried in vitro fertilization, resulting in three embryos, two of which did not make it.

“Honestly, that’s what hurts the most. He knew before we married that I couldn’t have kids naturally, but I still tried my best with IVF, even though my eggs are weak,” she said tearfully. “We have one embryo left, ‘Gold.’ I was planning to surprise him, hoping we could have our baby. Maybe that’s what triggered him—he didn’t want the surprise.”

Boy Abunda directly asked if a third party might be involved in Gerald’s decision to end their marriage. Ai-Ai didn’t confirm but admitted that, as a wife, she sensed something. “As a wife, you just know. I feel like there’s someone else.”

She also revealed that Gerald had cheated on her before in 2019, so she felt no need to find out if he was seeing someone now. “It doesn’t matter. He was already firm in his decision, so what’s left to fight for? If I stay, I know how it will end. My dignity and self-worth would be gone. I know it would happen again—he already cheated in 2019.”

Though still processing everything, Ai-Ai hopes to one day forgive Gerald. “Forgiving is easy to say, but I want to forgive him with my whole heart. Right now, I’m still processing it all.”

On the topic of whether she would revoke Gerald’s green card petition, Ai-Ai clarified, “I’m a green card holder and petitioned him as my husband, and it’s already approved. It’s just a matter of time for him to get his green card. In the initial frustration, I thought about it, but I won’t do that. He’s still my husband, and this is my way of helping him have legal status in the U.S.”

In the end, Ai-Ai shared an emotional message for Gerald: “I hope you find the happiness you’re searching for, especially the child you want. I wish you well because, in our ten years together, you were a good husband. Maybe this is just life. I just hope you’re happy. I wish you all the happiness you’re looking for.”
