In a major crackdown against illegal cigarette operations, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has uncovered a massive ₱8.5 billion tax liability following simultaneous raids on a cigarette factory in Bulacan and three warehouses in Valenzuela. The operation, conducted on November 6-7, 2024, marks the BIR's largest anti-illegal cigarette move this year.

The raids, which stretched into the early hours of the morning, targeted a factory in Bulacan and warehouses suspected to be part of a larger criminal network. The operation led to the confiscation of over 11.5 million packs of illicit cigarettes, along with equipment and materials used in manufacturing the illegal products.

According to BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui Jr., "The BIR will not stop raiding factories and warehouses involved in illicit cigarettes." Six Chinese nationals were arrested during the operation, who are believed to be behind the illicit manufacturing operations. The BIR also cited several violations under the National Internal Revenue Code, including unlawful business operations, tax evasion, and illegal possession of cigarette manufacturing equipment.

This successful raid highlights the BIR's continued commitment to fighting illegal trade and securing the country's tax revenues. With the ₱8.5 billion in tax liabilities now exposed, this operation serves as a strong warning to other illegal manufacturers and sellers of cigarettes in the Philippines.
