Senator Christopher “Bong” Go is making waves once again with his push for Senate Bill No. 2814, or the Free Legal Assistance for Military and Uniformed Personnel Act. This proposed law is all about giving uniformed personnel, like police officers and soldiers, access to free legal aid when they face cases related to their official duties. For Go, it's not just about laws—it’s about looking after those who protect us.

“We ask so much of our uniformed personnel, yet many of them face legal battles simply for doing their jobs,” Go explained. “This bill ensures that they’re not left alone to handle these challenges, as long as they’re doing their duties within the bounds of the law.”

Building on Duterte’s Legacy

As Vice Chairperson of the Senate Committee on National Defense, Go highlighted the continued need to support law enforcement and military personnel, drawing inspiration from the Duterte administration's successful initiatives. “Former President Duterte made good on his promise to increase their salaries, and that was just the start. Now, we need to ensure their welfare extends to legal protection,” Go said.

He noted that police officers often face dangers and tough decisions daily, putting their lives on the line for the country. “Our government has a responsibility to support those who uphold the law and act with integrity,” he stressed.

Beyond Legal Aid: Holistic Support

Go’s proposal isn’t limited to legal assistance. He also emphasized livelihood programs for police families, financial aid during emergencies, and medical support. “We want to make sure their families don’t suffer when they’re out there serving the public,” he added.

This holistic approach, Go explained, is based on a model proven effective in Davao City during Duterte’s tenure as mayor. Legal aid, financial assistance, and even livelihood programs were made accessible to officers and their families. “When police officers are supported, they perform better, and the public benefits as well,” Go said.

Addressing Public Trust

One of Go’s goals is to strengthen the public’s trust in law enforcement. “When people see that police officers are trained, properly equipped, and supported, trust in the system grows,” he pointed out.

The senator also stressed the importance of fairness, saying, “If a police officer acts unlawfully, they should be held accountable. But if they’re doing their job and acting in good faith, we must have their backs.”

Broader Reforms on the Horizon

In addition to Senate Bill No. 2814, Go has been championing other initiatives, including modernization efforts for the Philippine Coast Guard and opposing proposals that could negatively affect military pensions. “We cannot afford to take a step back when it comes to supporting those who safeguard our nation,” he said.

Bong Go’s advocacy reflects his belief that supporting uniformed personnel ultimately benefits the nation. “This isn’t just about helping our soldiers and police officers—it’s about ensuring peace, order, and security for every Filipino,” he concluded.
