Bong Go Urges PhilHealth: Make Life-Saving Treatments Accessible To All

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go isn’t holding back when it comes to pushing the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to deliver on its promise: expanded healthcare coverage under the Universal Health Care Act.

In a letter received by the Senate Committee on Health, which Go chairs, PhilHealth committed to covering life-saving treatments and devices for major mortality causes like angioplasty, pacemakers, and diabetic monitoring devices. The implementation date? December 31, 2024.

For Go, it’s a non-negotiable move to ensure millions of Filipinos can access essential medical interventions without the crushing financial burden. “Napakalaking tulong po ang maibibigay ng mga benepisyong ito,” he stressed, adding that no Filipino should have to choose between health and finances.

Why This Matters

Heart diseases and diabetes remain the top killers in the Philippines. Yet, treatments like angioplasty can cost hundreds of thousands of pesos, far out of reach for most families. This reality often forces people to borrow money or sell belongings just to save a loved one.

Through its pledged reforms, PhilHealth aims to bridge this gap, offering expanded coverage guided by clinical standards. Go emphasized, “Kailangan nating gawing abot-kamay ang mga serbisyong medikal na ito para sa bawat Pilipino.”

The Bigger Picture

This push ties into the broader goals of the Universal Health Care Act, signed into law in 2019. The act’s vision? No Filipino should face financial catastrophe due to medical expenses.

Go has been relentless in holding PhilHealth accountable, especially after controversies surrounding fund management. From questioning the transfer of excess funds to the National Treasury to urging reforms like scrapping outdated policies, Go’s Senate Health Committee has kept the pressure on.

And while PhilHealth has made other commitments — like free medicines, better case rates, and coverage for preventive care — Go has made it clear: he’s not letting up until every promise is fulfilled.

“Ang pondo ng PhilHealth ay para sa health! Pera po ito ng taumbayan, bawat piso ay pinagpaguran,” Go declared.

What’s Next?

With the December 2024 deadline approaching, all eyes are on PhilHealth. Will it deliver on its promise? For Bong Go and the millions of Filipinos counting on these reforms, the clock is ticking.
