Breaking Barriers: The #DapatPWEDE Campaign Launches To Transform Accessibility In The Philippines

This week marks a pivotal moment in the fight for accessibility with the launch of the #DapatPWEDE campaign. Spearheaded by Life Haven Center for Independent Living (CIL), this dynamic initiative is set to challenge and reshape how accessibility is approached for persons with disabilities across the Philippines.

Partnering with InvictusPH, Linya-Linya, PuddyRock, HeroesHQ, and a passionate team of advocates, Life Haven CIL is taking a stand against the systemic neglect in infrastructure, information and communication technology (ICT), and services that continue to marginalize those with disabilities.

The recent conversation around the ramp at EDSA Busway PhilAm Station has shed light on a pressing issue: despite making up a significant portion of our population, persons with disabilities are often sidelined in discussions and decisions that affect their access and mobility. This ramp is more than just a construction flaw; it’s a glaring example of the larger, systemic problems that need immediate action.

Dr. Jun Bernardino, President of Life Haven CIL, aptly pointed out, “In a rapidly advancing world, why are some still left behind? The EDSA ramp issue underscores the urgent need for systemic change. It’s not just about fixing one ramp; it’s about addressing the multitude of barriers that persist across our communities.”

The #DapatPWEDE campaign is a bold rejection of the 'pwede na' (good enough) mentality. It’s about demanding more than just compliance with the legal standards—it's about ensuring that accessibility is an inherent part of our societal framework, not an afterthought.

With its clear message, ‘Di pwede ang pwede na. DAPAT PWEDE—accessibility must be a given,’ the campaign is calling on everyone to join the movement, raise their voices, and drive the change that’s long overdue.

This isn’t just a campaign; it’s a commitment to ensuring that every person, regardless of their abilities, can navigate their world with ease and dignity. Let’s stand together, speak out, and make accessibility a reality for all.
