The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has raised the alert level of Bulusan Volcano to Level 1 due to low-level unrest, indicating a heightened state of activity. The volcano, located in the Province of Sorsogon, has exhibited several indicators prompting the elevation in alert status.

As of June 5, 2024, Bulusan has experienced eight volcanic earthquakes, suggesting internal movements within the volcano. Additionally, the emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2) has reached 30 tonnes per day since May 20, 2024, indicating increased volcanic gas output. The plume, measuring approximately 100 meters tall, is exhibiting moderate emission, drifting towards the east-southeast direction.

Moreover, ground deformation studies reveal inflation within the volcano's edifice, indicating the accumulation of magma beneath the surface. While there have been a total of eight volcanic earthquakes recorded, only four have sufficient data for accurate location determination.

In response to the elevated alert level, PHIVOLCS has issued precautionary measures. Entry into the 4 km-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited, and entry into the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) requires vigilance. Furthermore, flying any aircraft near the volcano is prohibited to ensure the safety of air traffic.

PHIVOLCS reminds residents and visitors of potential hazards associated with Bulusan Volcano, particularly the risk of sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions. These eruptions, characterized by the explosive release of steam and volcanic gases, can occur without warning, posing threats to nearby communities.

Authorities are closely monitoring Bulusan Volcano's activity and urge the public to remain vigilant and heed official advisories. Updates on the volcano's status will be provided as the situation develops.
