In a disturbing escalation of tensions at Ayungin Shoal on June 17, the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) engaged in aggressive and coercive actions during a humanitarian rotation and resupply mission, resulting in significant damage to vessels of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The CCG's maneuvers included physically obstructing AFP operations, deploying bladed weapons, and using blaring sirens and strobe lights to intimidate Filipino troops stationed aboard the BRP Sierra Madre (LS57). Shocking footage captured CCG personnel brandishing various bladed and pointed weapons, threatening AFP troops and damaging their communication and navigation equipment.

"The core issue remains the illegal presence and activities of China within our jurisdiction," stated Philippine military officials, condemning the hostile behavior of the CCG. The AFP emphasized that such aggressive acts by the CCG only serve to exacerbate tensions in the region.

Despite facing overwhelming odds and blatant harassment, Filipino troops exhibited resilience and courage, effectively defending their position during the encounter. The AFP reiterated its commitment to upholding international law and maintaining peace and stability in the disputed waters.
