Chinese Military Harasses And Injures Filipino Scientists In Cay 3
Screengrab from PTV
A People’s Liberation Army Naval (PLAN) helicopter, identified as Helicopter 57, engaged in risky low-flying activities over Cay 3 last March 26. This resulted in distress among personnel and injuries sustained by a team of scientists, BFAR crew, and media present at the site.

The helicopter hovered dangerously close, approximately 50 feet above Cay 3, for a duration of about 10 minutes, causing concern and discomfort among those present. The strong wind and debris generated by the rotor wash of the helicopter led to minor injuries, including cuts and scratches, among the individuals on the Cay.

The hazardous situation also posed a significant challenge to a BFAR crew member who was operating an underwater drone at the time. The powerful winds and debris hindered their ability to return ashore, forcing them underwater. Fortunately, another quick-thinking BFAR crew member acted promptly to rescue the endangered individual, averting a potentially disastrous outcome.

Adding to the alarming nature of the event, research divers at Cay 3 reported hearing loud "ping" sounds at three-second intervals, heightening concerns about the safety and security of the area.

The incident raises questions about the adherence to safety protocols and the need for responsible conduct during military exercises in civilian-populated or sensitive areas. Authorities are urged to investigate the matter thoroughly to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the safety of all individuals involved in such activities.
