Cignal Dominates Farm Fresh With A Sweeping Victory; Eyes Tough Road Ahead

Cignal HD Spikers kicked off their challenging four-game schedule in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Invitational 2024 with a bang, sweeping Farm Fresh in a commanding 25-16, 25-10, 25-18 victory at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex in Laguna. The HD Spikers were eager to make a statement after their bronze medal finish in the recent Reinforced Conference, and they didn’t disappoint.
From the get-go, Cignal took control, breezing through the first two sets. But the third set wasn’t as smooth, with Farm Fresh showing a bit more fight. Trailing 8-10, Cignal’s experience and composure kicked in. They responded with a strong 5-0 run to regain the lead and, from there, they never looked back.
Key players like MJ Perez and setter Gel Cayuna shone in the critical moments. Perez was instrumental in their late rally, racking up four of Cignal’s last eight points. Meanwhile, Cayuna, who earned the best player of the game honors, set up plays that kept Farm Fresh on the defensive.
Despite Farm Fresh's Trisha Tubu and Caitlyn Viray putting up some resistance, it wasn’t enough to stop Cignal’s momentum. The HD Spikers sealed the match in just over an hour, sending a clear message that they’re a team to watch.
Cayuna summed it up perfectly: “The key was our energy. We really wanted to finish the match as quickly as possible.” But with a packed schedule ahead, she emphasized the need for both physical and mental toughness. “We need to be ready, not just physically but mentally as well. The schedule is exhausting.”
Cignal’s next hurdle is a match against winless EST Cola, followed by a showdown with powerhouse Creamline. After a brief break, they’ll face the defending champions Kurashiki Ablaze. With hopes of sweeping all their matches, the HD Spikers have their sights set on the championship game on Sept. 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
As for Farm Fresh, they’ll be looking for their first win against EST Cola on Monday after two tough losses.
