Coast Guard Races Against Time After Sinking Of Vessel In Bataan
Screengrab from PCG
Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) swung into action after an unknown vessel sank in the waters off Barangay Cabcaben, Mariveles, Bataan. At around 5 PM on July 27, 2024, three 44-meter Coast Guard vessels arrived at the scene and confirmed the sunken vessel’s presence.

Today, divers from the Coast Guard conducted an initial underwater assessment, revealing the vessel to be the MTKR Jason Bradley. While no cargo was found aboard, the divers are continuing their operations to assess the full situation.

In another development, the Coast Guard is also addressing another maritime incident involving the MT Terra Nova, which sank in the vicinity of Limay, Bataan. Harbor Star divers have reported nine leaking valves on the vessel, which was carrying industrial fuel oil (IFO). By 10:42 AM today, July 28, 2024, the divers had successfully applied a second layer of sealant to prevent further leaks. They are now monitoring the situation closely to ensure there is no additional leakage.

President Bongbong Marcos and Department Of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista have both emphasized the urgency of the situation. PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan has directed all involved parties, including the shipping company and salvors, to take immediate action to prevent any further environmental damage. Salvage operations are expected to be completed within the next one to two weeks.
