Coast Guard Updates On Bataan Oil Spill Recovery: A Look At The Latest Efforts

Hey everyone, here’s the latest scoop on the ongoing recovery operations in Bataan as of August 28, 2024:

MTKR Terranova

The Harbor Star team, who’s been on cleanup duty, reported some big numbers. They’ve collected over 806,000 liters of oily waste since the operation kicked off on August 19. Here’s the daily breakdown:

- August 19: 2,350 liters
- August 20: 36,100 liters
- August 21: 42,026 liters
- August 22: 81,136 liters
- August 23: 17,103 liters
- August 24: 121,724 liters
- August 25: 101,603 liters
- August 26: 104,202 liters
- August 27: 67,871 liters
- August 28: 232,187 liters

They’ve been working around the clock, and on the 28th alone, they managed to collect a whopping 232,187 liters of oily waste, with the rate of recovery hitting around 24,614 liters per hour. No leaks were found during the underwater inspections, and oil samples have been taken for further analysis. The BRP Sindangan was on-site, using water cannons to handle any remaining oil sheen.

FES Challenger, the salvor in charge, has been busy re-sealing and patching up the vessel’s manholes and air vents. Meanwhile, the Oil Spill Response Team has been patrolling the area around the sunken ship to keep an eye on things.

MV Mirola 1

Coast Guard personnel have secured MV Mirola 1 at the Diving Industry Shipyard in Barangay Alas-asin, Mariveles, Bataan, ensuring it’s safe and stable.
