DOH Reports Higher Dengue Cases But Lower Fatalities: Early Detection And Better Health Practices Show Promise

The Department of Health (DOH) has noted an increase in dengue case detection, with encouraging signs that more Filipinos are seeking early consultation. This trend could lead to earlier testing, diagnosis, and more effective dengue management, ultimately helping to save lives.

Recent epidemiological data from January 1 to August 10, 2024 (Morbidity Week 37), shows a total of 150,358 dengue cases nationwide. This marks a 34% increase compared to the 107,950 cases reported during the same period in 2023. Despite the rise in cases, the number of deaths has decreased significantly. There have been 286 dengue-related deaths reported so far this year, compared to 421 deaths recorded during the same timeframe last year.

Interestingly, a spike in cases was observed between June 30 and July 13, 2024, with 23,350 cases recorded—20% higher than the 18,784 cases from the previous two weeks. However, the number of new cases dropped to 13,360 between July 28 and August 10, 2024. While this decrease is encouraging, the DOH advises that late consultations and delayed reporting could be factors.

All regions, except SOCCSKSARGEN, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Bicol, experienced an increase in dengue cases over the last 3-4 weeks leading up to August 11, 2024.

As dengue cases remain a concern, the DOH continues to remind the public of the "4S" strategy to combat dengue:

Search and Destroy - Eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
Self-Protection - Wear light-colored clothing and apply mosquito repellent.
Seek Early Consultation- Don't wait; consult a healthcare provider if symptoms appear.
Support Fogging - Participate in community efforts to spray and fog areas where dengue outbreaks are likely.

"Dengue cases tend to rise during the rainy season, so it's crucial that we remain vigilant," said Health Secretary Teodora Herbosa. "It's reassuring that more Filipinos are seeking early consultation, which is leading to fewer deaths. Let's keep our surroundings clean and continue searching and destroying mosquito breeding grounds."

As the rainy season continues, the DOH urges everyone to stay proactive and follow these preventive measures to help reduce the spread of dengue.
