Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Teodoro Herbosa dismissed the notion of implementing border controls and mandatory mask-wearing in response to reported cases of a new COVID-19 variant.

Secretary Herbosa addressed concerns about the FLiRT COVID-19 variant detected in Singapore, noting that it primarily manifests as respiratory tract infections, resembling symptoms such as coughs and common colds.

"I'm not considering border control, mandatory masks – I'm not thinking that," Secretary Herbosa stated during the briefing, responding to questions about the perceived rise in COVID-19 cases in the Philippines.

He assured that the Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ) is diligently monitoring the health status of foreigners entering the country through their health declarations upon arrival.

Secretary Herbosa advised individuals to take precautionary measures, particularly recommending vaccination and suggesting that those at risk should consider postponing travel to areas experiencing a surge in cases.

While emphasizing the importance of adhering to minimum public health standards, Secretary Herbosa stressed that additional vaccinations should be decided through personal discussions between patients and their physicians, acknowledging the potential waning immunity from vaccines.

He noted that priority for vaccination should be given to high-risk individuals, highlighting the substantial number of individuals already vaccinated with booster shots.

Secretary Herbosa reiterated the need for the public to maintain minimum health precautions such as practicing cough etiquette, avoiding crowded places, and ensuring proper ventilation.
