The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 7 – Central Visayas is keeping a close watch on the ongoing preemptive evacuation in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, due to the unrest of Mt. Kanlaon. In response to the increased seismic activity, DSWD is working hand-in-hand with local authorities to ensure that displaced families are taken care of.

According to a report from Central Visayas Regional Director Shalaine Marie Lucero to Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian, as of 10 p.m. on Tuesday (September 10), about 88 families, or 248 individuals, have already been evacuated. These evacuees are currently taking temporary shelter in three different public schools.

In Barangay Masulog, 65 families (204 people) have been moved to Masulog High School. Meanwhile, 10 families (31 people) from Barangay Malaiba are now staying at Malaiba Elementary School, and three families (13 people) from Barangay Pula have been evacuated to Pula Elementary School.

Regional Director Lucero confirmed that the quick response team (QRT) for Negros Island is on high alert, prepared to assist if the situation worsens. She also assured the Canlaon City mayor, the Negros Oriental governor, and Congresswoman Joselyn Limkaichong that DSWD is ready to augment disaster response efforts and provide necessary relief items.

With Mt. Kanlaon’s volcanic activity on the rise, DSWD is closely coordinating with the local government to finalize an emergency response plan. Refresher sessions are being conducted for QRT members, ensuring they’re prepared to be deployed as needed.

In terms of resources, DSWD Field Office 6-Western Visayas has reported to Secretary Gatchalian that they have stockpiled essential supplies. Bacolod City has over 32,000 family food packs (FFPs), with an additional 37,000 packs prepositioned in various localities around Negros Occidental. Canlaon City itself has close to 7,000 boxes of FFPs, along with non-food essentials like hygiene kits, kitchen supplies, and modular tents.

The neighboring province of Negros Oriental is also prepared, with 14,000 FFPs stored in Dumaguete City and another 3,400 in Vallehermoso.

As of September 10, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded 288 volcano-tectonic earthquakes since midnight, signaling the continuing unrest of Mt. Kanlaon.

With the situation developing, the DSWD remains on standby, ready to support local government efforts and provide much-needed relief to affected families.
