In a move that could change the game for Filipino farmers, a brand-new food processing training center was officially opened in Bombon, Camarines Sur on October 8, 2024. The event saw some key figures joining forces for a shared cause, including Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. Executive Director Sebastian C. Quiniones Jr., former Vice President Atty. Leni G. Robredo, and Second Secretary NISHIMURA Tokiko of the Embassy of Japan.

But what does this new center mean for our farmers?

For years, post-harvest losses have been a major concern for many Filipino farmers. Imagine working hard to cultivate your crops, only to see a significant portion of the harvest wasted due to inadequate storage or processing facilities. It’s disheartening, to say the least. This is where the newly established training center steps in—not only providing a space for skill development but also equipping farmers with practical knowledge in food processing to maximize their produce.

With hands-on training and new equipment, farmers now have the opportunity to transform their raw harvest into processed goods. That means less waste, more profit, and better sustainability for their livelihoods. They can explore new avenues like creating rice-based products or adding value to local fruits and vegetables. It’s a shift that encourages farmers to think beyond the farm and embrace the business side of agriculture.

And it doesn’t stop there. The training center also aims to foster community collaboration, helping farmers connect with local entrepreneurs and expand their market reach. By addressing post-harvest losses through innovative processing techniques, this initiative is not just about saving produce—it’s about empowering the entire agricultural community.
