The Filipino fishing boat "Akio" experienced an engine explosion 17 nautical miles southwest of Bajo de Masinloc on June 29, 2024.

Following the incident, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant CG Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan dispatched the BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407), patrolling the area, to assist the eight fishermen aboard the half-submerged vessel. Two of the fishermen sustained second-degree burns and received first aid from Coast Guard nurses.

The BRP Sindangan provided the fishermen with food and water and is currently towing the damaged fishing boat to Subic, Zambales, with an expected arrival at around 9 AM on July 1, 2024.

The rescue operation encountered interference from China Coast Guard and PLA Navy ships, which ceased their shadowing and blocking after being informed of the humanitarian mission. The Chinese authorities also offered aid, deploying two RHIBs to assist the fishermen.

PCG Spokesperson CG Rear Admiral Armando Balilo emphasized the diplomatic communication between PCG and CCG during the incident, underscoring the focus on humanitarianism over sovereignty issues.

CG Admiral Gavan highlighted the importance of the PCG's presence in ensuring maritime safety and vowed to continue protecting Filipino fishermen.
